Zelensky's Hometown Pounded by Russian Missiles Amid Ukraine's Counteroffensive

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

In a harrowing escalation of the conflict, a nocturnal missile attack by Russia on Kryvyi Rih, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's birthplace, resulted in the death of 11 people, as per announcements by regional authorities on Tuesday.

A residential building in the town was targeted, resulting in four casualties, while another seven lives were lost at a warehouse, informed the region's governor. In addition to the fatalities, Kryvyi Rih's Mayor, Oleksandr Vilkul, reported that 28 people suffered injuries during the assault.

Reacting to the assault on Tuesday, Zelensky shared on Telegram, “Russian assailants persist their aggression on civilian infrastructure, common towns, and citizens."

These attacks coincide with Ukraine's highly anticipated counterattack in the country's south and east. The Ukrainian forces have reportedly made minor gains, managing to reclaim control over a handful of villages.

In other news, the U.S. Army has renamed Fort Polk as Fort Johnson to honor a World War I Medal of Honor recipient. Furthermore, the House has passed a bill limiting federal power to ban or regulate gas stoves.

Despite Ukraine's counteroffensive, Russian missile attacks continue to plague the country, including the capital, Kyiv, and Kharkiv in the northeast. Ukrainian authorities affirmed that all missiles targeting Kyiv were intercepted on Tuesday morning. The military also reported that out of 14 missiles fired at Ukraine and one Iranian-made explosive drone launched overnight Monday, 10 were successfully neutralized.

Contrary to Ukraine's reports of territorial advances, Russia's military claims to have thwarted all attacks to date.

Moreover, the obliteration of the Nova Kakhovka dam, located a mere half an hour from Kryvyi Rih, last week has precipitated a humanitarian catastrophe in central and southern Ukraine. Widespread flooding has led to mass displacement and crop destruction. The responsibility for the dam's destruction remains disputed, with both Ukraine and Russia pointing fingers at each other.

"In a harrowing escalation": I'm afraid there is no escalation here, as we've been used to these missiles hitting civilian targets since the very beginning of this war. Unfortunately.
