BELGOROD, Russia - Local authorities confirmed that Russian forces had successfully intercepted and shot down multiple drones within the southern region of Belgorod, Russia. This development came on Wednesday, following the Russian assertion of suppressing a significant cross-border incursion from Ukraine the previous day.
The interception of these drones occurred overnight, with Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reporting on a Telegram post. He indicated that there were no human casualties. However, he noted damage to unspecified administrative buildings, residential properties, and vehicles.
There were no immediate comments from Ukrainian officials.
Russia's Defense Ministry had previously announced overcoming a severe cross-border assault, claiming to have eliminated more than 70 assailants during a 24-hour-long engagement in Belgorod. The ministry did not report any Russian casualties.
Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, affirmed that a combination of local troops, air strikes, and artillery had successfully dispelled the attackers.
The attack reportedly left twelve local civilians injured, with one older woman passing away during an evacuation process.
The precise details of the incident, which took place approximately 80 kilometers (45 miles) north of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, far from the ongoing war front, remain unclear.
Moscow attributes the incursion, which started on Monday, to Ukrainian military saboteurs, while Kyiv insists it was a rebellion against the Kremlin by Russian partisans. It remains challenging to reconcile these conflicting narratives or verify the actual objectives behind the attack.
The targeted region houses various fuel and ammunition depots as part of Russia's military infrastructure. Moscow officials have refrained from commenting on the total number of attackers involved or explaining the protracted effort required to repel them.
Intermittent spillover from the ongoing war has affected the Belgorod region and other neighboring areas such as the Bryansk region. Russia initiated this conflict by invading Ukraine in February 2022.
In other developments, Ukraine's General Staff reported "heavy fighting" persisting in Bakhmut, contradicting Russia's claim of having fully seized the devastated city.
Located in the Donetsk province, Bakhmut is one of four provinces illegally annexed by Russia last autumn. The prolonged nine-month conflict in Bakhmut has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties as Ukraine continues to resist the invading Kremlin forces.
Oleksandr Syrskyi, the head of Ukraine’s ground forces, confirmed that their "defensive operation" in Bakhmut is ongoing, with certain "successes" achieved on the city's outskirts. He did not elaborate further.
Ukrainian officials maintain their stance that the battle for Bakhmut is far from over.
Great work
