Russia Launches Large-Scale Strikes Across Ukraine Ahead of Victory Day Celebration

By Kremlin.ru, CC BY 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=40087103 A day before Russia's Victory Day, commemorating its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, the Russian military launched widespread strikes on Kyiv and various regions across Ukraine, injuring five people and damaging infrastructure. As Russia prepares for a military parade in Red Square, reports indicate progress in its offensive in Ukraine.

The missile and drone attacks included setting a food warehouse on fire in Odessa, while other Ukrainian cities reported explosions. The timing of Russian President Vladimir Putin's strikes on Ukraine is symbolic, aligning with his mission to "denazify" Ukraine, just as Soviet troops did during World War II.

In Bakhmut, scorched earth tactics continued as Russia's Wagner military group, expecting new weapons from Moscow, decided to remain in the city in hopes of capturing it by Tuesday, just before Victory Day celebrations. Explosions were reported in the southern Kherson region and the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region.

Videos circulated on Telegram of a burning structure in Odessa, identified as the targeted food warehouse. The extent of the recent attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas remains unclear, as authorities could not determine the number of drones deployed.

Air raid alerts sounded for hours across approximately two-thirds of Ukraine, and concerns grew over the safety of Europe's largest nuclear power plant. The Russia-backed governor of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia province, Yegeny Balitsky, ordered the evacuation of 18 Russian-occupied communities, including Enerhodar, where most of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant's workers reside. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that at least 1,500 people were evacuated from two unspecified cities in the region as of Sunday.

Desperate gambit to hit *something* important. If they'd managed that it would have been mentioned in the speech by Putin. I hope the damage and loss of life was minimal in Ukraine.

Did anyone watch The Russian Dudes livestream of the parade? What a farce, first a paranoid speech from Putin, then a parade with just one(1) tank, a WWII-era T-34/85 , also only one ballistic missile was shown and no air assets at all. Total time for the parade was about 45 min, the vehicles were about 10 min of that. It was surreal how quickly it ended.

1 inch = 25.4 mm. So 30 mm is over an inch in dia.! Even 23 mm is almost an inch. Man, those things are like cannons! And yes, people are just people. We are not 'good'. We are not 'evil'. We are some mixture of both. That's why I like fiction in which the characters are all morally ambiguous. The cops and the robbers. The series "Mayor of Kingstown" is one such. You can see a kind of necessity in what everybody does; and nobody (except Mom of course) is 'clean'. I'm told that about 2% of ground troops have no reaction to killing someone, and this 2% are responsible for the large majority of enemy fataliti…
