Iran Accused of Supplying Assault Drones to Russia, U.S. Cites Deepening Military Ties

The U.S. administration announced on Friday that Russia appears to be expanding its military ties with Iran, accepting hundreds of unmanned assault drones used in their operations against Ukraine.

The White House, quoting newly released classified information, specified that the drones, also known as Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), were produced in Iran, transported via the Caspian Sea, and later utilized by Russian troops against Ukraine.

"Russian forces have been launching attacks on Kyiv using Iranian-built UAVs in recent weeks, intensifying fear among the Ukrainian people. The military alliance between Russia and Iran seems to be consolidating," stated White House representative John Kirby.

Kirby voiced concerns that Russia might collaborate with Iran to build Iranian UAVs within Russian territory. He shared that the U.S. had data suggesting Russia was obtaining resources from Iran necessary to construct a drone factory, anticipated to be fully functional by the beginning of next year.

He revealed, "We're releasing satellite images of the anticipated site for this UAV production facility in Russia’s Alabuga Special Economic Zone."

The spokesman noted that the cooperation between the two nations was mutual, with Iran aiming to procure military equipment worth billions of dollars from Russia, including helicopters and radar systems.

"Russia has been offering Iran an unparalleled level of defense cooperation, encompassing missiles, electronics, and air defense," Kirby stated.

He characterized the defense collaboration as detrimental to Ukraine, Iran’s neighboring countries, and the international community, asserting that the U.S. would continue utilizing all available resources to expose and disrupt these activities, and is prepared to do more.

Kirby pointed out that the drone transfers were a breach of UN regulations, and the U.S. would strive to hold both nations accountable.

Previously, the U.S. has imposed sanctions on Iranian officials from a defense manufacturing company over the supply of drones to Russia. Iran has confirmed dispatching drones to Russia, but previously stated that the shipments occurred prior to Russia's invasion in February.

Kirby pledged that the U.S. would maintain sanctions on those involved in supplying Iranian military equipment to Russia for use in Ukraine.

Kirby revealed that a new advisory would be issued by the U.S. on Friday "to assist businesses and other governments in comprehending the threats associated with Iran’s UAV program and the illegal procurement practices Iran employs to acquire components for it."

I don't even know what to say about this. My anger is growing daily. The West needs to intervene more actively to make this stop.
